Microbiological and chemical evaluation of acid mine drainage from mining sites in Southwestern, Nigeria

چکیده

Microbial content of acid mine drainage effluents contaminated streams from some geographical areas was evaluated. Water obtained sites in Ekiti and Osun state where twelve (12) samples were different locations. Culture plating method used to analyze the for bacteria, Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (AAS) determine heavy metals such as Cd, Co, Pb, Cr, Zn, Cu Mn. The results biochemical morphological characterization isolates revealed three probable bacterial which are Bacillus subtilis, Pseudomonas spp. Staphylococcus aureus; B. subtilis being bacteria with highest percentage frequency occurrence. Heavy analysis drains shows that concentration Cr Zn exceeded permissible limit set by WHO except this study established presence sites, is an indication contaminated. It therefore essential proper dissemination information concerning dangers these microbes could pose human.

Preventing acid mine drainage from mine tailings

Mining activity always has high impact on its surroundings, being waste deposition the cause of multiple and complex problems to the environment. One of them is Acid Mine Drainage (AMD), causing acid water percolation through large areas in the mine site. Portugal was a prosper tungsten producer from the beginning of the XX century, having its apogee during World War II. Nowadays there are mill...

Recovery of Metals from Acid Mine Drainage

Acid Mine Drainage (AMD) poses a severe pollution problem attributed to current and past mining activities. Low pH, high concentrations of sulphates and various heavy metals makes AMD treatment a major concern because of possible deleterious effects of the effluent on the surroundings. Treatment methods to address AMD focus on neutralizing, stabilizing and removing problem pollutants through va...

Depth-dependent geochemical and microbiological gradients in Fe(III) deposits resulting from coal mine-derived acid mine drainage

We evaluated the depth-dependent geochemistry and microbiology of sediments that have developed via the microbially-mediated oxidation of Fe(II) dissolved in acid mine drainage (AMD), giving rise to a 8-10 cm deep "iron mound" that is composed primarily of Fe(III) (hydr)oxide phases. Chemical analyses of iron mound sediments indicated a zone of maximal Fe(III) reducing bacterial activity at a d...

Acid Mine drAinAge (AMd) MAnAgeMent

AMd is recognized as one of the most serious environmental problem in the mining industry. the problem of acid mine drainage (AMd) has been present since mining activity began thousands of years ago. Mining activity has disrupted the hydrology of mining areas so badly that it is extremely difficult to predict where water would eventually re-emerge. its causes, treatment have become the focus of...
